I have a love hate relationship with the treadmill. I prefer running outdoors but there are times I rely on the treadmill to supplement my training. During the cold winter months I run primarily on the treadmill and run outside if the weather permits. I also hit the treadmill if it is raining hard or storming outside. It’s been a rainy fall in Michigan so far and I had to switch from running outside to hitting the treadmill. I haven’t been on the treadmill since late spring. Earlier this week I dreaded the thought of having to run on the treadmill.
I woke up on Wednesday in my typical fashion and heard the rain pouring outside. I stared out the window for like 5 minutes wishing the rain would stop so that I could run outside. I opened the weather app on my phone and looked at the hourly forecast. Rain all morning! I did not feel like running on the treadmill. Then the little voice in my head echoed “No excuses”. I put on my running gear, hopped in the car and made my way to the gym.
The first few minutes were brutal. I had to get my legs acclimated to running on the treadmill again. I was all over the place. After mile one, my cadence improved and I was in my groove. By mile three I was thinking the treadmill is not so bad. I ended up running 5.5 miles on the treadmill that morning. I felt great afterwards and my legs definitely appreciated the change. The next day I ran 3 miles on the treadmill after my upper body workout. My training calls for a 10-11 mile run. There’s rain in the forecast for the weekend. If the rain becomes an issue, I will do my 10-11 miles on the treadmill and visualize running outside the whole time 😀.
